Strengthening Collaboration between Prison and Prosecutorial Authorities


A meeting was recently convened by the Commissioner General of Prisons (CGP), Jeremiah Katungu, with the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), Silvester Mwakitalu, at the Prisons Headquarters in Msalato, Dodoma. The objective of the meeting was to foster closer collaboration and streamline the coordination of prison and prosecutorial operations.

CGP and SHIMA Executives Discuss Productivity Enhancement

On 3 October 2024, the CGP convened a meeting with senior executives of the Prison Army Material Production Organisation (SHIMA) at the Msalato Headquarters. The meeting concentrated on operational matters and investigated strategies to augment productivity within SHIMA.

The discussions centred on optimising production processes, improving quality control, and exploring new revenue-generating initiatives.

Comprehensive Prisoner Rehabilitation

The meeting between the CGP and DPP brought to light the necessity for a holistic approach to prisoner rehabilitation. The meeting addressed the potential for improving educational and vocational training programmes within correctional facilities, as well as the development of post-release support structures to facilitate successful reintegration into society.

Upgrading Prison Infrastructure

A further pivotal issue addressed at the CGP meeting with SHIMA Executives was the necessity for prison infrastructure modernisation. The executives presented a plan for the modernisation of existing facilities and the expansion of capacity in order to accommodate the growing prison population. It was emphasised that improved living conditions, healthcare and recreational facilities are essential components of prisoner rehabilitation and well-being.

Sustainable Revenue Generation

The meeting between the CGP and SHIMA Executives aimed to identify innovative strategies for the sustainable generation of revenue. The potential for SHIMA to produce goods and services for sale in external markets was also discussed, with the objective of contributing to the financial self-sufficiency of the prison system.
