The Dar es Salaam Sanitation and Sanitation Authority (DAWASA) has convened a meeting of stakeholders in the field of sanitation, including Council Health Officers, Local Chairmen, private service providers and civil society stakeholders. The purpose of the meeting was to discuss ways of improving sanitation services in the Dar es Salaam region through the implementation of various ongoing projects. This includes:

  • Council Health Officers

  • Local Chairmen

  • Private service providers

  • Civil society stakeholders

Purpose of the Meeting

The principal objective of the meeting was to deliberate on strategies for enhancing the sanitation services in the Dar es Salaam region through the implementation of a range of ongoing projects.

Remarks from DAWASA

In his remarks at the workshop, the DAWASA Sanitation Project Manager, Engineer Amon Gracephord, underscored the Authority’s dedication to the advancement of environmental sanitation services. The following key projects are currently in progress:

  • Construction of modern sewage treatment plants

  • Development of simple waste disposal systems in residential areas

  • Construction of public toilets

  • Acquisition of modern garbage disposal vehicles

Completion of Public Toilets

The Authority is pleased to announce the completion of 30 public toilets, which will be of significant benefit in congested areas across all five councils. In the words of Engineer Gracephord, the workshop will “facilitate enhanced collaboration between key stakeholders and facilitate improvements in sanitation services.”

Collaboration with Experts

Dr. Sibomana Leonard, an expert on sanitation services from the consultant contractor Economic and Basic Foundation (EBF), emphasised the close collaboration between their organisation and DAWASA. The organisation’s primary areas of interest are:

  • Raising awareness about sanitation services

  • The objective is to facilitate behavioural change among the beneficiaries of these projects.

In conclusion, this workshop represents a continuation of DAWASA’s efforts to cultivate positive relations with stakeholders in the provision of Majisafi services, as well as environmental sanitation services. It is the intention of the Authority to significantly enhance sanitation services in the Dar es Salaam region through these collaborative efforts.
