The Minister of State Office of the Vice President (Union and Environment), Hon. Dr. Ashatu Kijaji, has urged coordinators and managers of projects under the Office of the Vice President to accelerate their completion in order to benefit the Pemba community.

“It is the responsibility of each and every one of you to ensure that these projects are completed in accordance with the agreed timelines, or even ahead of schedule. This will allow the people of Pemba to benefit from these projects as soon as possible.”

Inspection of Infrastructure Projects

During a visit to Pemba on 24 September 2024, Dr. Kijaji conducted an inspection of several projects, including:

* Project to reinforce the infrastructure of beaches in Sipwese, Southern Region: The project is designed to mitigate coastal erosion and protect existing infrastructure from damage caused by seawater.

* Community project to construct stairs in Shehia Kizimbani, Northern Region: The project is designed to enhance accessibility for residents in the area.

Call for Timely Completion and Maintenance

Dr. Kijaji highlighted the importance of ensuring timely project completion to guarantee a prompt impact on the community. Furthermore, she highlighted the responsibility of all stakeholders to ensure the proper maintenance of the facilities once completed.

“Our leaders are committed to our well-being, which is why I am here today to assess the progress of these projects,” said Dr. Kijaji. “I urge project managers to accelerate construction and encourage all relevant parties to assume responsibility for these facilities for their long-term benefit.”

Review of Poverty Reduction Initiatives

The Minister also conducted a review of the implementation of the Poor Household Survival Plan in Shehia Kizimbani. The project’s objective is to enhance income, opportunities and access to essential services for vulnerable households.

“This project provides our citizens with the skills, resources and support they need to build a better future for themselves and their children,” said Dr. Kijaji.

Implementation Progress

The District Head of Wete North, Pemba Region, Dr. Hamad Omar Bakari, provided an update on the progress of the projects currently underway. He also drew attention to the construction of pedestrian bridges, which have considerably enhanced connectivity and accessibility to agricultural regions.
